As part of a transportation corridor enhancement project, Ecoplans Limited was retained to provide concept designs for a multi-use trail that would connect two portions of the Waterfront Trail in the Town of Whitby.  With the existing connection as a gravel shoulder on a busy road, the proposed widening of the corridor provided the opportunity to create an off-road trail with nodal lookouts and resting points adjacent to Lynde Marsh.

A variety of active and passive recreational opportunities were identified including the incorporation of angling sites at the nodes.  Interpretive features were also incorporated to provide trail information as well as educational information regarding the surrounding Lynde Shore Conservation Area.

Another key component of the project focused on road ecology and the inclusion of effective and practical strategies such as ecopassage systems to mitigate wildlife road mortality.

The key components of the concept development included identifying:

  • A preferred nodal concept for active and passive recreational uses
  • The location of the nodes or platforms as they related to recreational opportunities such as angling

The incorporation of platforms into the larger scheme of interpretive features of
both the Lynde Shores Conservation Area and the Waterfront Trail
